Fans sour on sweeter version of Thailand's smelliest fruit
Thai government scientist Songpol Somsri said he has successfully crossbred the durian fruit to create a special type that does not smell as strong. Songpol said the new type of fruit, called Chantaburi No. 1, could broaden the acceptability of the durian, unlocking the door to new American and European customers who are put off by the foul stench of the traditional durian. The nearly odorless durian will obtain final approval in the coming weeks from Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture. However, Durian lovers say they are horrified at the prospect of their beloved fruit without its characteristic stink. "I don't think it's possible to make a durian that doesn't smell," said Somchai Tadchang, the owner of a durian orchard on Kret island. "Anyway, durians actually smell good. Only rotten durians stink."

Government keeps YouTube ban despite removal of clip
The Thai government retained a ban on the Youtube.com Web site on Thursday, despite the removal of a short film deemed insulting to the king. Although the offending video was withdrawn, the site continued to feature at least one still frame from the contentious 44-second clip. "[Getting rid of the video] is not enough," said Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom, the minister of information and technology. "We want the picture removed too before we unblock it." After the site was blocked and news of the ban circulated, the number of viewers of the video skyrocketed, with more than 40,000 visiting the site in about 24 hours. Total views reached 66,553 before the video was pulled.

Thailand not to extradite Vietnamese dissident
A Thai appeals court Tuesday overturned a decision to extradite Vietnamese dissident Ly Tong, who was on trial for violating Vietnam's airspace by hijacking a plane and dropping 50,000 anti-communist leaflets over Ho Chi Minh City. The court ruled Tong's act was a political offense, rather than a criminal one, and Thailand does not extradite people to face trial on political charges. "Vietnam wants to take the defendant back to prosecute him for a political offense," said Judge Wisarut Sirisingh. "What he did caused no harm to the territorial security of Vietnam." The 61-year-old Tong, a U.S. citizen who fled Vietnam after the war, said he planned to return to the United States to continue his political struggle by peaceful means.

A survey by the Abac Poll Research Centre found that 62 percent of respondents continue to support Surayud Chulanont as prime minister. Meanwhile, 56.4 percent of respondents favored no political party if an election was called today, while Thai Rak Thai was supported by 20.7 percent of voters and 18.5 percent said they would cast their ballots for the Democrats. When asked what they would do if they were foreign investors, 54 percent of respondents said they would withdraw their money from Thailand.

Game of Thrones Season 7 premiere brings record ratings
Last Sunday’s season premiere of “Game of Thrones” was watched by 16.1 million viewers across all platforms, including cable, online streaming and on-demand viewing. This is a 50 percent increase from last year’s Season 6 kickoff episode. The episode was the most-watched premiere ever for both “Game of Thrones” and HBO. The Season 7 premiere was arguably the most hotly anticipated episode in the show’s history, coming after a longer-than-usual hiatus between seasons. In years past, “Game of Thrones” seasons have debuted in April, but this season required a longer production period. The show now has 12 episodes remaining - six more this season, and a final six in Season 8.
