Youth council wants end to sex in media
The Children and Youth Council of Thailand has called on the media industry to stop publishing seductive photos of scantily-clad movie stars and teen idols, saying it sets a bad precedent. At its first ever meeting held last Friday, council president Ek Wong-anan told the industry to correct their perception that the majority of youths wanted to see such photos on the front pages of magazines and newspapers. Ek cited the council's survey of 594 children and youths across the country in which 83.7 percent said publishing sexy and revealing photos was improper. "We would like the media and the teen idols to take it as their duty to create role models and instill moral values in children," he said.

Bumrungrad International hospital in Bangkok is becoming a popular destination for international travelers in search of low-cost medical procedures, particularly among Americans who lack comprehensive health insurance and Europeans who are unhappy with long waiting times at home. Bumrungrad treated 450,000 foreign patients last year - more than any other hospital in the world. Ruben Toral, Bumrungrad's marketing director, says that medical tourism will eventually lead to medical outsourcing . "Your corporation, your insurer, your government could send you [to Bumrungrad] for surgery and make significant savings." However, the trend is creating a backlash among physicians in the West, many of who voice serious concerns about the cleanliness of Thai hospital facilities and the level competency among Thai health care professionals.

Wetland bird rediscovered in Thailand
A wetland bird that scientists had not seen for 130 years has been rediscovered at a wastewater treatment plant in Thailand, according to Birdlife International. The large-billed reed-warbler was discovery in 1867 in the Sutlej Valley of India, but because it was so rare, scientists had long debated whether it represented a true species. "The Indian specimen has short, round wings and we speculated it is resident or a short-distance migrant, so its appearance in Thailand is very surprising," said Stuart Butchart of BirdLife International. "A priority now is to find out where the large-billed reed-warbler's main population lives, whether it is threatened, and if so, how these threats can be addressed."

A total lunar eclipse was visible in Thailand last Sunday at 4:30 a.m., while a partial solar eclipse will take place on March 19 at 7 a.m. Astrologer Boonlert Pairin said that while a lunar eclipse relates to the fate of the people, a solar one concerns the government, and having both in the same month is not a good sign. He warned that political chaos and conflicts were in the cards for March and April.
