Wife of deposed Thailand PM pleads not guilty to tax evasion
Pojaman Shinawatra, the wife of ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, went on trial Monday on charges of tax evasion, in the first corruption-related case to be prosecuted against the former PM's friends and family. Pojaman, her brother and her secretary are being tried on charges of evading millions of baht in taxes related to a 1997 transfer of shares in the family-owned Shin Corp. Pojaman could face 14 years in prison if convicted. All three have pleaded innocent. The case relates to a 1997 transfer of shares in Shinawatra Computer, the company that later became the family's telecommunications empire, which was sold last year to a Singapore's Temasek for US$2.2 billion. Investigators for the Assets Examination Committee claim that Pojaman and her brother misrepresented the nature of the share purchase to avoid paying taxes.

Good Thai girls learn to striptease
The recently opened Rumpuree Dance Studio in Bangkok's Amarin Plaza offers erotic dancing and striptease classes to otherwise conservative Thai women who feel the need to let loose and relieve stress. Most of the attendees of the classes are educated, upper-middle-class career women between the ages of 20 to 50, according to Busakorn Vorameth, the studio's owner. The first half hour of the class involves stretching while the lights are dimmed and soft music is played. But during the second hour, the lights are turned on, the music's tempo increases, and the instructor teaches the pupils sexy moves while dancing in front of a mirror. Busakorn said that along with exercise and stress reduction, the class can help women to become more comfortable with their bodies.

Thailand moves to rein in foreign retailers
The Thai government has endorsed a new law aimed at reigning in the expansion of foreign retail giants following an outcry by local shop owners. The new law calls for local governments to assess and approve any proposed new branches of supermarket chains in their province. In addition, a new central body called the Retail and Wholesale Supervision Committee would also be set up to regulate the retail business around the country. Foreign-owned supermarket chains including Tesco and Carrefour complain that the new law, if enacted, would ultimately hurt the consumer by limiting choice and hindering competition. The government also said it is now planning to toughen its enforcement of existing zoning laws to slow the expansion of foreign retailers.

The struggle to save classic Thai architecture
A small group of architects in Chiang Mai is working to preserve Lanna-era temples and revive the architectural style. Many of the Northern Thai temples have fallen into disuse and disrepair, suffering from years of neglect by municipal authorities and a lack of enforcement of laws to protect heritage monuments. Also, about 70 percent of the temples in Chiang Mai are rented out to the poor or have been put to commercial use in some capacity. "This is our identity; we have to conserve it, otherwise we will have nothing to be proud of," said Vitul Lieorungruang, an architecture professor at Chiang Mai University. "A place that becomes completely modern doesn't know who it is anymore."

Last Sunday’s season premiere of “Game of Thrones” was watched by 16.1 million viewers across all platforms, including cable, online streaming and on-demand viewing. This is a 50 percent increase from last year’s Season 6 kickoff episode. The episode was the most-watched premiere ever for both “Game of Thrones” and HBO.
