Protest in Thailand for BBC man
Foreign journalists based in Thailand are planning to gather in Bangkok Tuesday for an event in support of Alan Johnston, a reporter for the BBC who was kidnapped at gun point in Gaza City seven weeks ago. Similar events are expected to take place in Beijing and Jakarta later this week. Since Johnson was seized, there has been no direct information on his fate. There have been widespread protests about the kidnapping in the UK and Israel, and in the West Bank and Gaza. Johnson had lived and worked in Gaza for three years and was the only Western reporter permanently based in the often violent and lawless territory.

Bangkok Night Bazaar defies deadline to close
Shopowners at Bangkok's Suan Lum Night Bazaar are planning to defy a deadline on Monday to vacate the premises while a court decides whether to shut the popular tourist destination. The site is located in prime real estate in central Bangkok due to its proximity to Lumpini park and the subway, and the land is owned by the Crown Property Bureau, which manages the royal family's assets. In February, the CPB signed a long-term lease on a large section of the site to mall developer Central Pattana, which is looking to build a skyscraper, a hotel and shopping facilities.

Poll: Thailand still top holiday destination
Participants of an online survey by VISA Asia Pacific and the Pacific Asia Travel Association named Thailand as their most likely destination. "Thailand's reputation as a relaxing place where people can enjoy the local culture, natural beauty and friendly people continued to increase in the minds of those looking to travel to Asia," despite international media attention on the country's civil unrest before the survey, PATA said. The survey of 5,050 people identified as "committed or possible Asia travelers" voted Japan and China as the other top destinations. About 47 percent of respondents identified "terrorism" as the top barrier to travel, with Indonesia the destination most commonly identified as affected by it, followed by Sri Lanka and the Philippines.

"Rome wasn't built in a day, and we hope the guarantee of rights for the third sex in the constitution will pave the way for amendments in other laws to give gays equal rights," the 50-year-old AIDS activist said.
