Facebook to buy WhatsApp for $19 billion
Facebook has bought smartphone messaging app WhatsApp in a deal worth a total of $19 billion in cash and shares. It is the social networking giant's largest acquisition to date. WhatsApp has more than 450 million monthly users, and the company claims it is signing up about 1 million new users a day. In a press release announcing the deal, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg described WhatsApp's services as "incredibly valuable". Analysts say that Facebook made the acquisition because Whatsapp appealed to younger users, and because WhatsApp actually had greater penetration in some international markets than Facebook. Some industry experts also said that the price Facebook paid was not reflective of Whatsapp's true value.

Petition to deport Justin Bieber heads to the White House
An online petition to deport Justin Bieber from the United States and revoke his green card has garnered more than 100,000 signatures. The petition on the WhiteHouse.gov website, which is the official internet home of the office of the U.S. president, called for the 'dangerous' and 'destructive' pop artist to be sent back to Canada, his native country. The petition was in response to incidents recently in which Bieber was arrested for drunk driving and drag racing in Miami Beach. The petition states that Bieber "is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nation's youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society." Because the petition met the 100,000 signatures requirement, the office of U.S. President Obama will be forced to respond.

Man says exploding Samsung Galaxy burned down his house
A Hong Kong resident has claimed that his Samsung Galaxy S4 exploded and caught fire in his hands. He then threw the flaming phone onto his flammable sofa, causing it to catch fire as well. This then caused his entire house to burn down. Samsung's local office in Hong Kong said it would analyze chemicals from the scene of the fire to see whether any of them could have come from its factory. Some have speculated that the phone could have caught fire due to the phone containing rogue parts, or that the man was using a fake charger made from inferior materials.

The subsidy program, however, was followed by a huge loss, projected to exceed tens of millions of dollars, and a vast amount of rice has been left unsold and rotting in warehouses across the country.
