Bangkok offers 15,000 free Wi-Fi spots
The Bangkok government will offer 500,000 people free Wi-Fi access starting Thursday. The move is part of a pilot project that will provide 15,000 Internet hotspots. Bangkok's municipal government said the scheme was part of the city's effort to cut back on its energy. Officials said they hoped residents would drive less if electronic communication was more convenient. The free service is set to last for one year in its initial phase, and will offer only slow 64K connections designed mainly for checking email or sending text messages.

Thai dowries change with the times
Warangkana Chomchuen of U.S. news broadcaster NBC said in this opinion piece that the tradition of giving a bride's family a dowry is changing in Thailand. Chomchuen said the Thai groom typically pays the "Sin Sod" of cash, jewelry, gold or property to prove to the bride’s family that he will be a good provider. In a marriage between two affluent families, the dowry can reach as high as $500,000. Chomchuen said that in recent times, young Thai grooms give dowries as a simple symbolic gesture, and then have the money returned to them by the bride's family after the wedding is over.

Bangkok bus drivers strike
Private bus companies in Bangkok went on strike last week to ask for the government's help to ease the impact of soaring fuel prices following the Central Administrative Court's injunction against bus fare hikes. Bus drivers parked about 200 buses at and near the entrance of the Ministry of Transport on Bangkok's Ratchadamdeon Nok Avenue. Thousands of low-income commuters were without bus services on some routes and much-reduced service on others. Private Bus Operators' Association president Chatchai Chaiwiset urged passengers to understand the move, as the private bus companies could not operate their services any longer because of skyrocketing diesel fuel prices.

Vendors form coalition to resist mega-retailers
In an attempt to become more competitive against large hypermarket chains, more than 500 Thai wet market operators in Bangkok and around the country have signed a declaration to establish the Market Assembly of Thailand. The coalition is being assisted by the Internal Trade Department, which will provide advice on how the vendor can obtain inexpensive goods. The vendors and hope that by working as a team, they can boost their competitiveness and fight off major retail businesses that are allegedly threatening traditional business in Thailand.

Last Sunday’s season premiere of “Game of Thrones” was watched by 16.1 million viewers across all platforms, including cable, online streaming and on-demand viewing. This is a 50 percent increase from last year’s Season 6 kickoff episode. The episode was the most-watched premiere ever for both “Game of Thrones” and HBO. The Season 7 premiere was arguably the most hotly anticipated episode in the show’s history, coming after a longer-than-usual hiatus between seasons. In years past, “Game of Thrones” seasons have debuted in April, but this season required a longer production period. The show now has 12 episodes remaining - six more this season, and a final six in Season 8.
