Tiger Temple lures Thailand tourists
The Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno, or Tiger Temple, in Kanchanaburi is attracting a torrent of visitors interested in being up close and personal with one of the world's most magnificent, and dangerous, beasts. The temple currently houses 18 big cats, with names such as Storm, Lightning and Rainbow. Resident monks say visitors typically approach the tigers with some trepidation, but in the end, the cats prove irresistible for most. One monk at the temple said he had not seen any serious accidents since visitors started coming some five years ago. "A few tourists were slightly injured, scratches from the naughty little tigers, but no serious accidents have been reported," he said.

Thailand's economic growth slowest in almost 2 years
Thailand's economy expanded 4.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2006, down from 4.7 percent in the previous period, marking the lowest growth rate since a 3.5 percent rise in the first quarter of 2005. For this year, experts say the recovery of investments will be slower than expected because of politics. "Growth is expected to slow down especially due to foreign investors shying away,'' said Vishnu Varathan, an economist at Forecast Singapore. "Consumer sentiment is also down because of political instability and violence.''

Breathing easier as the battle for blue skies pays off
A decade and a half after Thailand began a battle for better air quality, Bangkok has emerged as a role model for pollution-choked capitals in Asia, with considerably cleaner air than Beijing, Jakarta, New Delhi and Shanghai, according to Thomas Fuller of The New York Times. Improvements were realized after Thai officials demanded for oil companies to produce cleaner fuel, used higher taxes to phase out two-stroke motorcycles, converted taxis to run on clean-burning liquefied petroleum gas and imposed progressively stricter emissions controls based on European norms. Bangkok's air, on average, now falls within the limit set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency of 50 micrograms per cubic meter, but is above the European Union limit of 40.

Rising baht set to break key barrier today
The baht is likely to break the Bt35 barrier today due to massive selling of dollars by exporters concerned the currency will continue to surge against the greenback. The local unit reached a new nine-year high on Wednesday when it closed at Bt35.01 against the U.S. dollar. Yesterday's climb was attributed to the implementation of a central bank alternative for investors. From today, the Bank of Thailand will no longer apply the 30 percent withholding requirement on foreign inflows if they are hedged in foreign-exchange swaps
