   Football star Zidane shares Thailand trip with his family
French footballer Zinedine Zidane, currently in Thailand to take part in a charity tournament, was spotted taking in the sights of Bangkok on Monday. The father of four took his children to watch a muay Thai fight, and went with his wife to the Grand Palace. Zidane will travel to Chiang Mai this weekend to participate in a football match to raise funds for local AIDS charities.

 Southern Thailand on edge after attacks
Twenty-nine bombings and 20 other attacks by Muslim insurgents took place in the four violence-prone southern provinces on Sunday night leaving eight dead. Some of the attacks targeted ethnic Chinese in the region who were celebrating Lunar New Year. The violence continued Monday as bombs exploded at four locations in the south, killing an army major and wounding two soldiers, three policemen and 13 civilians.

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said he is looking to buy a house in Sydney's luxurious eastern suburbs, where he wants to relax and take a break from politics. In an interview that aired Tuesday on Australian television, Thaksin said he was pondering an academic career focusing on alleviating poverty in his homeland. "It's time for me to compensate on what I've missed in the past," he said. "I have to live my life to allow me to have some kind of happiness, because I've been working hard, too much, for my family, for my country, for the people."

Thailand's TV Channel 7 on Tuesday cancelled the soap opera "Love Song On Both Sides Of The Mekong" due to complaints by the Laotian government that the show was offensive. Laos said the drama about a Thai-Laotian couple contained distasteful scenes including one in which Thai actor Sukolwat Kanaros dropped Laos' national flower, the frangipani, in the river as he despaired over uniting with his love, Laotian singer Alexandra Bounxouei, and because no family elders were present when Kanos's character made his marriage proposal. "Although Laotians and Thais speak the same language, some things may be acceptable to Thais but not acceptable to Laotians," said Souvanna Phouyavong, a top envoy at the Laotian embassy. "In order to maintain good relations, we expressed our concern that this may cause misunderstandings."

The Board of Airline Representatives is balking at recommending its members move back to Don Muang until aviation officials explain how they plan to operate two international airports in Bangkok simultaneously. "BAR is ready to meet with the public sector on how to operate the two airports. But so far, we have not been contacted by any government agencies," said BAR President Brian Sinclair Thompson. He said the government should be clear about which airlines would be allowed to operate at which airport, about how and when the repairs at Suvarnabhumi would be carried out and completed, and about how the facilities would coordinate connecting flights. The association said it was planning to submit a letter to Airports of Thailand asking for details about its plans for the two airports.
