Gays and katoeys demand constitutional rights
Gay, lesbian, and transvestite groups in Thailand are campaigning for a clause in the new constitution giving official status to the "third sex," in an effort to end discrimination. Although Thailand appears very tolerant of homosexuality, with many openly gay celebrities and katoeys seen commonly throughout the country, Natee Teerarojjanapongs of the Thai Political Gay Group said the predominantly Buddhist nation remained deeply conservative at heart and still had many rules and regulations discriminating against non-heterosexuals. "Rome wasn't built in a day, and we hope the guarantee of rights for the third sex in the constitution will pave the way for amendments in other laws to give gays equal rights," the 50-year-old AIDS activist said.

Six months since the opening of Bangkok's US$4 billion Suvarnabhumi Airport, complaints continue about corruption, cracked runways, poor planning and a shortage of toilets. A 15 percent rise in landing and parking fees were made effective on April 1, making the airport more expensive for airlines than rival facilities in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. "Airlines are not getting value for money for what they are paying at Suvarnabhumi," said Albert Tjoeng, spokesman for International Air Transport Association. "The increased charges are unreasonable, especially given the operational deficiencies at the airport." Many travelers also complain about so-called taxi "mafias" and their touts who pounce on bleary-eyed passengers in the cramped arrivals hall. "I don't think there is a set rate. They just do whatever they want to do," said Robin Tonsaker, a Canadian tourist. Airport officials claim they are working with the police to root out the mafia.

Thaksin plans to buy Manchester City football club
Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is reportedly planning to make a 92 million pound (5.9 billion baht) bid for the Manchester City football club in the English Premiere league. In 2004, Thaksin attempted to purchase a stake in Liverpool FC. Thaksin's bid will be made with business associates from China and the Middle East, according to website Hi-thaksin.net. The website also claimed that Mohamed al Fayed, the billionaire owner of London's Harrods department store and the Fulham Football Club, was involved in the negotiations on behalf of Thaksin.

More than a puppet on a string in Thailand
Sakorn Yangkheowsod, also known by the nickname Joe Louis, is helping to single-handedly keep alive Thailand's classical puppetry theater. Although classical puppetry has a long history in Thailand, the performances dwindled in the 20th century with the arrival of cinema and television. Beginning in 1985, Sakorn began the Traditional Thai Puppet Theater, also known as the Joe Louis Puppet Theater, at the Night Bazaar in Bangkok. Many have credited Sakorn with not simply having revived classical puppetry, but having endeared it to the masses. Last year, the Thai troupe won in the Best Cultural Performance category at the World Festival of Puppet Art in Prague, Czech Republic.

Asians rate sex lives so-so: Survey
The Global Sexual Wellbeing Survey, conducted by condom-maker Durex, has found that about 42 percent of Thais are satisfied with their sex lives. The report also found that, on average, 59 percent of respondents strongly agreed that sex was important to them. Thailand was the lowest on the list in this ranking, with just 38 percent agreeing to the above statement. Greeks had the most sex out of anyone in the world, with 164 times per year, while Japan was the most infrequent with 48.
