Thailand introduces frequent traveler immigration card |

By the end of this year, frequent travelers to and from Thailand will be able to bypass the often large queues at immigration and waltz through with the swipe of a card. The new immigration card is expected to be issued around the end of this year to coincide with the high tourist season. Those who travel in and out of Thailand at least three to five times a year, regardless of their nationality, will qualify for the new immigration card. The Immigration Police will also open a brand new call center early in 2009 that will provide information for international travelers in eight languages.

Taxi drivers block roads to Suvarnabhumi Airport |

Travelers were forced to drag their heavy suitcases and walk to and from the airport terminals Thursday, as some 300 taxi drivers blocked the entrances to both the arrivals and departure lounges at Suvarnabhumi International Airport. The taxi drivers demanded they be exempt from having to use their meters when hired to take trips outside of Bangkok from the airport. A number of taxi drivers had earlier been arrested by police for refusing to turn on the meters and negotiating an inflated fixed-rate with passengers, especially international tourists. The Land Transport Department chief turned down the taxi drivers' demands and insisted that they use the meters. Airport authorities had to call in outside taxi drivers to work in place of those who went on strike.

Former massage parlor tycoon Chuwit Kamolvisit is adamant he is still fit to run for Bangkok Governor, following a well-publicized fist fight with a TV anchorman. Chuwit is urging voters not to use the incident to judge him and his bid to become Bangkok governor. Chuwit appeared on a news talk show on Channel 3 Thursday and ended up elbowing and kicking the show's anchorman in the face backstage after the show ended. Chuwit claimed that the talk show host insulted him by revealing information about the private conversation they had before the start of the show, which was supposed to be off-the-record.

The Bangkok government will offer 500,000 people free Wi-Fi access starting Thursday. The move is part of a pilot project that will provide 15,000 Internet hotspots. Bangkok's municipal government said the scheme was part of the city's effort to cut back on its energy. Officials said they hoped residents would drive less if electronic communication was more convenient. The free service is set to last for one year in its initial phase, and will offer only slow 64K connections designed mainly for checking email or sending text messages.

Warangkana Chomchuen of U.S. news broadcaster NBC said in this opinion piece that the tradition of giving a bride's family a dowry is changing in Thailand. Chomchuen said the Thai groom typically pays the "Sin Sod" of cash, jewelry, gold or property to prove to the bride’s family that he will be a good provider. In a marriage between two affluent families, the dowry can reach as high as $500,000. Chomchuen said that in recent times, young Thai grooms give dowries as a simple symbolic gesture, and then have the money returned to them by the bride's family after the wedding is over.
