Government keeps YouTube ban despite removal of clip

The Thai government retained a ban on the Youtube.com Web site on Thursday, despite the removal of a short film deemed insulting to the king. Although the offending video was withdrawn, the site continued to feature at least one still frame from the contentious 44-second clip. "[Getting rid of the video] is not enough," said Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom, the minister of information and technology. "We want the picture removed too before we unblock it." After the site was blocked and news of the ban circulated, the number of viewers of the video skyrocketed, with more than 40,000 visiting the site in about 24 hours. Total views reached 66,553 before the video was pulled.

Thailand not to extradite Vietnamese dissident

A Thai appeals court Tuesday overturned a decision to extradite Vietnamese dissident Ly Tong, who was on trial for violating Vietnam's airspace by hijacking a plane and dropping 50,000 anti-communist leaflets over Ho Chi Minh City. The court ruled Tong's act was a political offense, rather than a criminal one, and Thailand does not extradite people to face trial on political charges. "Vietnam wants to take the defendant back to prosecute him for a political offense," said Judge Wisarut Sirisingh. "What he did caused no harm to the territorial security of Vietnam." The 61-year-old Tong, a U.S. citizen who fled Vietnam after the war, said he planned to return to the United States to continue his political struggle by peaceful means.

General urges emergency rule in Bangkok | Print |  E-mail

General urges emergency rule in Bangkok

Coup orchestrator General Sonthi Boonyaratglin has asked Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont to impose a state of emergency in Bangkok to combat growing public opposition to the military-imposed government. The general's request preceded planned rallies by both pro-democracy groups and supporters of the ousted Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra. Sonthi said he was concerned that the rallies could lead to insecurity, which he said could hurt foreign investment, tourism and city construction projects. The declaration of a state of emergency would give the authorities the power to ban public gatherings, impose curfews and censor local news reports, and would contain some of the elements of martial law. The Thaksin supporters demonstrated Friday, while a coalition of pro-democracy groups plan to begin a weeklong protest at Sanam Luang this week.

Porn yet to boost panda's sex drive

Authorities at the Chiang Mai Zoo are showing videos of pandas having sex in the hopes of encouraging resident panda Chuang Chuang to mate with his partner, Lin Hui. However, the zoo's chief veterinarian, Kanika Limtrakul, said that Chuang Chuang has yet to become hot and bothered. "Chuang Chuang seems indifferent to the videos; he has no reaction to what he's seeing on TV," Kanika said. "But, we're continuing to show him videos and hoping they will leave an impression." Chuang Chuang will be reunited with his partner in about a week. The two pandas have been kept apart from each other since late last year as part of an effort to spark some romance between them.
