Hotels across Thailand are offering massive discounts and special deals to entice both foreign and domestic tourists to travel more during the low travel season from June to October. The usually slow season is especially sluggish this year as a result of the global economic recession, the ongoing political upheaval, and now the H1N1 flu pandemic. Hotel occupancy rate across the country has plunged 16 percent. Luxury hotels in Bangkok are the ones receiving the biggest blow, as travelers shy away from splurging on top-notch accommodation. Thai Airways International has slashed prices of its domestic flights to compete with low-cost airlines and is even offering free domestic connections to those flying into Bangkok from outside of Asia.

Elephants and their mahouts roaming the busy traffic congested streets of Bangkok could soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a tougher law to keep the animals off city streets. Bangkok authorities plan to offer financial incentives for elephant owners and impose tougher fines. Working in collaboration with a foundation under Her Majesty the Queen’s patronage, elephant owners could receive more than US$20,000 for their elephants, which will then be released back into the wild. The fine for bringing wild elephants into the city will increase from a few dollars to a few thousand.

A private school in Bangkok has suspended all classes for one week, after a grade-6 schoolboy and thirteen of his classmates have tested positive for the H1N1 influenza. The pupil developed flu symptoms and had no record of traveling abroad, unlike other flu patients who had traveled to the United States before showing signs of the virus. In Pattaya, 21 nightclub workers have also tested positive, after two Taiwanese tourists developed flu symptoms upon their return to Taiwan from the Thai beach resort town. The World Health Organization has announced the first flu pandemic in 40 yearsafter a sharp increase in reported cases of infection worldwide. Australia alone has reported more than 1,200 new cases of infection over the past week.

The Thai government will allow sale of alcohol throughout the 4-day Songkran festival in order to boost the flagging tourism industry. The National Committee for Alcohol Consumption Control decided in a meeting that the pros of allowing alcohol sale far outweigh the cons. An alcohol ban would drive away foreign tourists during one of Thailand's most popular festivals, and might also increase sales of illegal liquors. The sale of alcohol during Songkran will be in line with existing regulations, allowing alcohol sale from 11am until 2pm, and 5pm until midnight. The government will launch several anti-alcohol campaigns to discourage drinking and driving and drinking on the back of pick-up trucks.

Government lends a helping hand to the unemployed
Thousands of Thais who have lost their jobs are flocking to Impact Arena, where the government is holding a career workshop to help retrain workers with vocational skills. As many as 1 million people have lost their jobs so far, as the global economic recession forces businesses to close down. The career workshop provides free training for up to one month. Those who sign up will also receive a living and transport allowance for the duration of the course. Workers who choose to return to their hometowns after completing the course will also be entitled to receive up to 4,800 baht per month for three months to help them stand on their own two feet. The government’s multi-billion baht stimulus package includes cash handouts to low-income earners, those over 60 years of age, and investment in infrastructure projects to create more jobs.
