Woman leaves jail as reward for winning world title
Thai female boxer Siriporn Thaweesuk was released from jail yesterday as reward for winning the world light-flyweight title. Siriporn was released on parole from the women's prison in Pathum Thani province three years before the end of her seven-year sentence for selling amphetamines. Siriporn defeated Japan's Ayaka Miyano for the title in a prison yard bout in April amid cheers from other inmates and prison guards. "Thanks for those who supported a convict like me," Siriporn said. "Some may not agree but I don't care. I am happy that there are people willing to support me."

Thailand lifts ban on opposition web sites
Thailand's military-installed government has lifted a ban on web sites linked to deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, including the popular Hi-Thaksin web site. The move follows a high court ruling last week that dissolved the ousted prime minister's party, Thai Rak Thai. Earlier in the week, the military government removed a ban on political party activities, but Thai Rak Thai members are still barred from participation. Meanwhile, Thaksin said in an interview Thursday that he would like to return to Thailand from exile to live as a normal citizen once democracy is restored.

10,000 protest against Thai junta
More than 10,000 Thais demonstrated in Bangkok on Saturday to demand an end to the military-imposed government, with many calling for a return of deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra. Some protesters wore T-shirts emblazoned with the face of Thaksin. Police had banned protesters from marching outside the plaza, but the crowd defied the ban and walked to the army headquarters some three kilometers away from Sanam Luang plaza. The police formed two large human barricades to prevent the protesters from reaching the army building, but each barricade was peacefully dispersed following negotiations between officers and rally leaders. As they marched towards the headquarters, the crowd shouted: "Thaksin come back! CNS Get Out!" Pro-Thaksin groups have said they will continue daily demonstrations until a major anti-junta rally scheduled for June 24.

Train derails after track sabotaged
A passenger train derailed Monday in southern Thailand after saboteurs loosened a section of track. Nine people were injured. A three-meter section of rails was unscrewed, sending the northbound train off the tracks. Local officials suspect that Muslim rebels were responsible. The train, carrying about 200 passengers, derailed about 750 kilometers south of Bangkok in Pattani province's Kok Pho district.

The military junta and the Public Relations Department on Thursday shut down the Confidante community radio station hours after ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra called to talk to listeners on-air. In the broadcast, Thaksin called for an early election, and said people would not tolerate any delays in the election, points he has made in previous interviews in the foreign press. Bavorn Techa-in, chief of the National Broadcasting Commission, said the station had been set up unlawfully, but denied that there was any order to shut it down. Other media reports quoted the chief of the PRD as saying that he had in fact ordered it closed. The inspectors also seized a tape recording of the 15-minute call and talk by Thaksin. The interview marked the first time Thaksin had spoken to any Thai media since the Sept 19 coup.
