Man City bash held for Thai owner
About 8,000 people gathered for a free concert and Thai-themed party in Manchester, UK, hosted by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The party on Saturday was meant to celebrate Thaksin's purchase of the Manchester City football club. Those in attendance were entertained by a Frank Sinatra tribute singer, as the local media have often commented that the name "Shinawatra" sounds similar to "Sinatra." Local reports said that several fans of the team who were so eager to get Thaksin's autograph that they were stripping off and throwing their shirts at his security guards for him to sign. The club's new owner was making his first major public appearance since being ousted from power in Thailand by a military coup last year.

ศุกร์, 03 สิงหาคม 2007 |

The military junta is deploying at least 1,400 soldiers around Bangkok this weekend to reinforce security amid fears of fresh violence during anti-coup protests. Bangkok will be divided into 14 zones, with at least 100 soldiers deployed in each. Thailand's junta chief, General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, ordered the deployment to back up police after an anti-coup protest last Sunday turned violent with more than 100 injured in clashes with police. The soldiers will be deployed from Saturday through Tuesday, as Thailand observes a long weekend for a Buddhist holiday, but that period could be extended further, according to a junta spokesman. The announcement of the deployment came one day after nine protest leaders were arrested over clashes with police that took place earlier in the week.

Thailand tries to clarify prices in ads by budget carriers
Thailand's aviation authority has imposed new marketing rules for the country's budget airlines after consumers complained that prices in their advertisements were misleading. The new regulations require the airlines to submit their low-fare ads to the government for approval. Consumers have complained that purchased tickets were often more expensive than the advertised prices and that they came with too many restrictions. Discount carrier Nok Airlines welcomed the new rules, but said passengers should also read the fine print more carefully.
