Torture cited in southern Thailand |

Human rights group Amnesty International has accused the Thai government of being responsible for at least 34 cases of torture in the three southernmost provinces of Thailand. The group claims that at least four people were killed by torture during the government's crackdown on the Islamic insurgency movement in the south of Thailand from March 2007 to May 2008. Survivors and relatives of those who died told Amnesty International that the most commonly used methods of torture were electric shock and suffocation by placing plastic bags over the victims' heads. More than 3,300 people have died as a result of the insurgency in southern Thailand, which erupted in January 2004.

The coalition government led by the Democrat Party has secured its hold on power after winning the majority of the seats in Sunday's by-elections. According to unofficial results, the Democrats have won 20 of the 29 seats available, leaving only 9 seats for the opposition parties. In a separate race for the governorship of Bangkok also held on Sunday, the candidate from the Democrats sailed through, receiving a resounding 45 percent of the votes cast. Political analysts are hopeful the Democrats' victory will bring the much-needed stability back to Thailand's politics.

Best job in the world up for grabs
The Australian state of Queensland is offering what it calls the best job in the world. The successful candidate will receive a fantastic salary of 150,000 Australian dollars (about 3,750,000 baht) in exchange of lounging around for six months on a paradise island on the Great Barrier Reef. The job is open to anyone who is a good swimmer, an excellent communicator and able to speak and write English. His/her day-to-day duties include strolling along the beaches, snorkeling the reef, and reporting to a global audience on a weekly blog, photo diaries and video updates. The job offer is the state's attempt to boost its tourism industry during a global economic meltdown. Queensland's acting premier said "traditional tourism advertising just doesn't cut it sometimes and we are thinking outside the box by launching this campaign." Over the past year alone, the Thai government has blocked more than 2,300 Web sites, most of which for allegedly containing offensive content regarding the Thai monarchy. A senior official at the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology revealed that the number of Web sites containing inappropriate content about the highly revered Thai king has risen sharply in the past two years, due to the political upheavals in the country. Anti-government protesters have used lese majeste as a weapon to attack former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and politicians with alleged ties to him. Lese majeste is a serious crime in Thailand, the only country in the world which still upholds this law.

The ongoing closure of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports by anti-government group the People's Alliance of Democracy has left thousands of travelers and businessmen, as well as Muslim pilgrims, stranded. Airport authorities and airlines have had to shell out millions of baht to put up the stranded travelers at hotels around the city. A special flight with Iran Airlines has been chartered to carry more than 400 Muslim pilgrims to perform the Hajj in Saudi Arabia, and is scheduled to leave Songkhla's Hat Yai Airport Friday.
