Bangkok to have new floating market |

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has designated a run down pier and a dilapidated warehouse nearby as the site for a new floating market. Work to renovate the pier itself and the surrounding area will begin shortly and is expected to finish in the next three months. The pier, situated in Min Buri district, is on the notoriously polluted Saen Saeb canal, known for its smelly and murky water. A program to improve the water quality will soon be under way. The Min Buri floating market will add to Bangkok's many attractions and will serve as an alternative for the Damnoen Saduak floating market in Rajburi province. In a drive to increase tourist spending in the capital, the world renowned shoppers' paradise Jatujak weekend market will now be open on Fridays in addition to the weekends, starting February 20.

The Thai Prime Minister has confirmed that the Japanese government has indeed banned former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra from entering its country, as he is considered a fugitive. The United States government is also rumored to be considering revoking Thaksin's visa. The United Kingdom was the first country to blacklist the billionaire, soon after he had been convicted of corruption and sentenced to two years in prison. Since then, Thaksin has been traveling from one country to another. Currently, his whereabouts are unknown. However, he still makes frequent phone-interviews to thousands of his supporters during their mass gatherings, typically held in the northeastern region.

Cabinet endorses draft law to protect airports
The Thai cabinet has passed a draft law to protect all international airports in Thailand from intruders. The law will give full authority to the transport minister and the Airports of Thailand's security officials to disperse any trespassers. The draft law carries a maximum penalty of 10,000 baht and a minimum penalty of 500 baht. The closure of both of Bangkok's international airports in November and December last year has dealt a devastating blow to the country's reputation, its tourism sector and its export industry.

The distributor of the UK-based current affairs magazine The Economist has pulled all copies of the magazine's latest edition off the shelves in Thailand. This is the second time in two months that the magazine has been banned in the kingdom for fear of lese majeste charges. The latest issue contains an article about the Australian writer who was recently sentenced to a 3-year imprisonment for briefly referring to an unnamed crown prince in his little known novel. Shortly after being sworn in, the Thai government led by the Democrat party declared protecting the monarchy as its top priority. As a result, thousands of Web sites insulting the Thai royal family have been blocked, while several people, including a prominent university professor, are awaiting trial for allegedly insulting the monarchy.

The Thai government has announced it will waive tourist visa fees for three months as part of its attempt to boost the country's tourism industry. The visa fee waiving program is targeted mainly for Chinese tourists, who previously had to pay a small fee to enter Thailand. The global economic downturn, coupled with the political instability that led to the closure of Bangkok's two airports for over a week last December, will have a huge impact on the Thai economy, which relies heavily on money generated by the tourism sector. The government has allocated 1 billion baht of its 115-billion baht stimulus package to lure more tourists. The government is also considering lowering aircraft landing fees at the Bangkok International Airport to attract more foreign carriers to fly to Thailand.
