Prem distances himself from junta
Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda is attempting to distance himself from the junta after facing allegations of being the mastermind behind last September's coup. He told reporters on Saturday that he hoped the anti-coup protesters who accused him of being behind the coup would join with him in bringing about peace in the country. Last week, anti-coup protesters marched near Prem's official residence to accuse him of being behind the vicious cycle of coups.

Thailand's former first lady faces charges
Pojaman Shinawatra, the wife of deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was charged with evading millions of dollars in taxes, in a corruption case that could land Thailand's former first lady behind bars. If the Bangkok Criminal Court accepts the case, it would be the first prosecution of those close to Thaksin. Pojaman's brother, Bhanapot Damapong, and her secretary also face charges in the case, which centers on a 1997 transfer of shares in Shin Corp. An investigation by the Assets Examination Committee last month found that Thaksin's wife and her brother had to pay back taxes of about 546 million baht on the share transfer. Pojaman and her brother face a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison and a 400,000 baht fine each if convicted on two tax evasion counts.

Cocaine smuggled into Australia in dresses from Thailand
A Sydney man has been charged with importing half a kilogram of cocaine hidden in woven dresses from Thailand, according to the Australian Federal Police. Customs officers in Sydney seized a consignment of 11 African woven dresses, allegedly imported from Bangkok, with embroidered patches containing white powder wrapped in brown tape. They referred the consignment to the AFP, who tested the white powder, which proved to be cocaine. A little more than 500 grams of cocaine were removed from the consignment, with an estimated street value of A$ 200,000.

Flight from Bangkok makes emergency landing after passenger scuffle
An Indian Airlines flight from Bangkok to New Delhi made an emergency landing in Calcutta on Wednesday following an incident in which a passenger claimed he had a bomb in his bag after a scuffle with another passenger. An airline spokesman said the passenger, identified as Mexican national Eduardo Antonio, was drunk and became involved in a fight with another passenger. When the crew tried to subdue him, Antonio shouted that he had a bomb in his bag. The crew informed the pilot who decided to make an emergency landing. If found guilty, Antonio could spend 10 years in prison.

Muslims deny that Thai restaurants help fund terrorists
Many Thai Muslims fleeing the insurgency in southern Thailand have settled in Malaysia and found new lives as cooks in restaurants that feature Thai food. Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont claimed recently that many of these restaurants are a significant source of funding and recruitment for the separatists. Malaysian authorities vehemently deny the accusations. A recent study found that an estimated 230,000 Thai Muslims work in Malaysia and remit 6 billion baht annually. However, there are no figures on how much money comes from the restaurant workers.
