Interview: Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul talks in this interview about the recent decision by the Thai Censorship Board to cut four scenes from his new movie "Syndromes and a Century." Apichatpong said that rather than cut the four scenes, including one in which a monk is simply shown strumming a guitar, he decided to pull the movie's domestic release entirely. Apichatpong said he was saddened he was forced to pull the movie, but is taking the opportunity to submit a petition to the government to question what's wrong with the system. "For some filmmakers, it's become such a standard that when one makes a film, they're automatically aware of the censor system so they won't do this and that," he said. "I think it affects the way we tell stories. So many Thai films resort to being about comedy or ghost stories or something very light. But at the same time, this is about a studio system because my film is not part of this system that operates on fear."

Thai flash floods death toll rises to 37
The death toll from flash floods in southern Thailand that swept away holidaymakers at two mountainside waterfalls has risen to 37. On Sunday, more than 300 rescue workers continued to search for bodies near the Sairung and Praisawan waterfalls in the Yantakao district of Trang province. Four people remain missing. Hundreds of people were at the two sites celebrating the Songkran holiday when the floods struck Saturday afternoon. The flood was triggered by three consecutive days of rain that raced down the steep Bantad mountain range.

Thailand hopes holy sour candy will stop road accidents
Thai police on Monday began distributing 140,000 sweets blessed by a Buddhist abbot in the hopes of reducing road accidents this Songkran season by keeping motorists awake with the candies. On Saturday, 2,999 monks gathered at a temple to bless the confectionery, known as "super sours." "The major cause of the accidents is that people get very tired from driving after days of celebration," said regional highway police chief Colonel Panya Pinsuk. "The taste is very sour, which can keep you awake. The candy was also blessed by the monks, which makes people more comfortable and confident when driving." The government hopes to cut the number of road deaths by 15 percent from the nearly 500 who were killed last year.

World Bank cuts growth prediction
The World Bank on Thursday revised down its forecast for Thailand's economic growth in 2007 from 4.6 percent to 4.3 percent. The semi-annual "Monitoring the Thai Economy" reported that the bank had decreased Thailand's GDP growth projection because household consumption, as well as private and state investment in the country, had slowed due to political uncertainties and the ambiguous economic policy adopted by the current government. The bank projected that private consumption, private investment, state investment and imports would expand 3.5 percent, 4 percent, 4.2 percent and 5.9 percent, respectively, this year.

Thai government scientist Songpol Somsri said he has successfully crossbred the durian fruit to create a special type that does not smell as strong. Songpol said the new type of fruit, called Chantaburi No. 1, could broaden the acceptability of the durian, unlocking the door to new American and European customers who are put off by the foul stench of the traditional durian. The nearly odorless durian will obtain final approval in the coming weeks from Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture. However, Durian lovers say they are horrified at the prospect of their beloved fruit without its characteristic stink. "I don't think it's possible to make a durian that doesn't smell," said Somchai Tadchang, the owner of a durian orchard on Kret island. "Anyway, durians actually smell good. Only rotten durians stink."
