Similar to the hoopla surrounding the baby panda in Thailand, Australia’s Melbourne Zoo has had to extend its public viewing hours to a huge number of visitors coming to see the zoo’s new resident - a Thai baby elephant. Up to 3,000 people line up daily to get a glimpse of the baby elephant, born last month. The baby elephant was conceived by artificial insemination. In keeping with the Thai tradition of naming female elephants after flowers, five floral-themed names have been shortlisted from about 30. The Australian premier has called for Australians to cast a vote. The five shortlisted names are Leelawadee, Mali, Maliwan, Sumali, and Lyares. Mali gets the prime minister’s backing, as jasmine is his favorite flower.

Pet owners warned of fake rabies vaccine
After the death of a dog breeder at Bangkok’s weekend market earlier in February, health authorities warn pet owners to be wary of poor quality rabies vaccine which is not efficient in preventing rabies in dogs and cats. The woman, who also worked at the Public Health Ministry, had apparently administered the rabies vaccine to her dog by herself. Authorities are investigating whether the vaccine had expired or was fake. Pets bred from the particular store at the Weekend Market have already been quarantined. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will also provide 400,000 doses of rabies vaccine to be given free of charge to pets in Bangkok. The hotline 1555 is also available 24 hours a day for the public to report suspected rabies cases throughout the city.

After the sacking of Peter Reid as the coach of the Thailand national football team, the Thai Football Association has begun the hunt for Reid's replacement. Thailand is reportedly in talks with former England captain and Manchester United legend Bryan Robson to take the helm of the Thailand national team. The Thai Football Association chief has revealed that the response from Robson's camp has been very positive. If he accepts the post, Robson's first task would be to prepare the Thailand team for the Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore in November.

Hotels across Thailand are offering massive discounts and special deals to entice both foreign and domestic tourists to travel more during the low travel season from June to October. The usually slow season is especially sluggish this year as a result of the global economic recession, the ongoing political upheaval, and now the H1N1 flu pandemic. Hotel occupancy rate across the country has plunged 16 percent. Luxury hotels in Bangkok are the ones receiving the biggest blow, as travelers shy away from splurging on top-notch accommodation. Thai Airways International has slashed prices of its domestic flights to compete with low-cost airlines and is even offering free domestic connections to those flying into Bangkok from outside of Asia.

Elephants and their mahouts roaming the busy traffic congested streets of Bangkok could soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a tougher law to keep the animals off city streets. Bangkok authorities plan to offer financial incentives for elephant owners and impose tougher fines. Working in collaboration with a foundation under Her Majesty the Queen’s patronage, elephant owners could receive more than US$20,000 for their elephants, which will then be released back into the wild. The fine for bringing wild elephants into the city will increase from a few dollars to a few thousand.
