Thailand's top policeman vows to fight Pattaya's mafia gangs
Thailand Acting Police Chief Seripisut Temiyaves vowed Saturday to wipe out mafia gangs operating in Pattaya in the aftermath of the brutal slaying of two Russian tourists. "It's about time for me to wipe out mafia gangs operating in Pattaya because they've created a lot of problems for tourists in the past," Seripisut said. Seripisut also said he was doubtful that the alleged gunman, Anuchit Lamlert, had killed the women as a result of a botched robbery. Rather, local officials say they believe Anuchit was paid by members of the Russian mafia living in Pattaya to kill they two tourists.

Thailand to lift remaining capital controls
The Thai central bank will scrap remaining capital controls for foreign investments in bonds, mutual funds and property funds on Thursday following the resignation of the Finance Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula yesterday. A major issue now is who will succeed Devakula, who resigned on Wednesday after citing disagreements within the government over the appointment of an economic adviser. "Pridiyathorn built up a reputation as a shrewd economic observer during his time as head of the Bank of Thailand and gave the government some much needed economic clout," said Glenn Levine, an economist at Moody's Economy.com Web site. "With him now gone there is no telling what crazy ideas the interim government will come up with."

Security tightened in Bangkok amid fears
The Internal Security Operations Command tightened security at shopping malls and other public places in the Thai capital on Sunday, as authorities ordered forces to be on full alert for attacks by Muslim insurgents ahead of the Makha Bucha Buddhist holiday on March 3. Bangkok Govervor Apirak Kosayothin spent the weekend inspecting some of the city's major shopping malls to ensure that security guards were aware of the heightened measures and that closed-circuit cameras were in working order. Concerns about attacks were spurred by a wave of bombings Feb. 18 in the three restive southern provinces as thousands were celebrating Lunar New Year. The Australian, British and Canadian embassies last week updated their travel warnings about possible terrorism in the capital.
