Private bus companies in Bangkok went on strike last week to ask for the government's help to ease the impact of soaring fuel prices following the Central Administrative Court's injunction against bus fare hikes. Bus drivers parked about 200 buses at and near the entrance of the Ministry of Transport on Bangkok's Ratchadamdeon Nok Avenue. Thousands of low-income commuters were without bus services on some routes and much-reduced service on others. Private Bus Operators' Association president Chatchai Chaiwiset urged passengers to understand the move, as the private bus companies could not operate their services any longer because of skyrocketing diesel fuel prices.

CAT pulls the plug on telegrams
Last week, CAT Telecom officially closed its telegram service after 133 years, citing a decline in its popularity and low profits. The telegraph was the first modern form of public communication for Thai people and was introduced during the reign of King Rama V. It was put into service about eight years before the Thai postal service. Officials at the central post office in Bangkok saw the peak of the service's popularity about 30 years ago, when they were required to work around the clock in three separate shifts.

Vendors form coalition to resist mega-retailers
In an attempt to become more competitive against large hypermarket chains, more than 500 Thai wet market operators in Bangkok and around the country have signed a declaration to establish the Market Assembly of Thailand. The coalition is being assisted by the Internal Trade Department, which will provide advice on how the vendor can obtain inexpensive goods. The vendors and hope that by work as a team, they can boost their competitiveness and fight off major retail businesses that are allegedly threatening traditional business in Thailand.
