Writer: Thailand most accommodating in SEA |

In this interview with the Bangkok Post, internationally acclaimed U.S. travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux said he believed Thailand was the most accommodating of all of the countries in Southeast Asia. "I think that Thailand is the most accommodating, because Thais don't feel threatened by foreigners and feel like equals," he said. "National pride is important, because it gives you self-esteem. Many countries have been colonized and they are conflicted." Prior to this interview, the last time Theroux was in Bangkok was in 1985, when he was the keynote speaker at the SEA Write awards, held at The Oriental.

For his first night back in Thailand, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra booked a penthouse suite at the Peninsula Hotel for US$3,300 (103,000 THB). Thaksin's two-bedroom suite featured a private fitness room, butler's quarters and is decorated with Persian rugs, traditional Asian furniture and wood-paneled walls. Thaksin flew first class on Thai Airways from Hong Kong. The one-way trip costs about $850 (26,350 THB).

Anger at sign language 'slur' on Thai PM's nose
Supporters of Samak Sundaravej, Thailand's new prime minister, have complained that complaining television signers for the deaf hold on to their noses as a shorthand reference for the short-tempered political veteran. Samak's nose has long been a target for cartoonists, and the National Association for the Deaf in Thailand said sign language translators had been using the shorthand for more than a decade without complaint. But with the new parliamentary session televised this week, supporters among Samak's ruling People Power party noticed the reference and complained. "It is not meant as a nose joke," said one signer. "We have touched our noses for years to refer to Samak, but people noticed this time because we had to repeat the movement over 300 times."
